Rambo: First Blog

Okay here we go with my first real blog. To be honest it feels kind of good to be doing something different and in a way liberating just laying out random thoughts into the computer screen. So I am going to press on with this shit and come out and say my first blog isn't a music blog, rather, another obsession or passion of mine which is cooking. My wife Amanda informed me that she had picked up salmon patties, buns, and artichokes at Trader Joes today. I was kind of excited when she told me that because it sounded pretty good and we have been slacking in the cooking dinner department lately. So after I heard this wonderful news and while I was driving home from work I was listening to my ipod and this song came on which I am going to say listen to while you read the rest of this blog.

Pelican - Strung Up From The Sky (2009) off album What We All Come To Need

A typical day for me involves driving in my truck to and/or from work listening to music and hearing different songs either new or old and some of which, if I'm lucky, just fit the moment perfectly and I really enjoy. This was that song today. Pelican is an artist that has very little if any vocals and falls under the post-metal progressive/experimental rock category or something that sounds kind of like that. The more music you listen to and read up on the more genres that confuse the shit out of you, you run across. So I'm no genre expert, and quite frankly feel sorry for the people that are experts in this category because it must really drive them crazy the amount of diverse music out there that could fit into multiple genres. Anyways, pelican have been around for a while, the band Pelican have also been around for most of this decade and I have been a fan for a few years. There no words in this songs and its almost better that way. You can't give the excuse of why you don't like it because the vocals are screaming or growling as some of the other music I listen to a lot of has in it. In fact, you have no excuses why you don't like this other than you are a fucking idiot. Sorry, got to make this thing exciting right? I will talk more about whats good and whats not in a different blog. This one has to get back to its core which is cooking right?

Bamm!!

What you see there is what I had for dinner. No it's not beef, its not pork, it's fish. Specifically its salmon burgers which I seared up in my trusty cast iron skillet with artichokes steamed in a lemon/garlic base. For the burgers I cooked the meat on the skillet, then sautéed a red bell pepper cherry tomato mix in the juices, added some white wine, butter, whole grain mustard, chili sauce, lemon, and some other secret ingredients to make a sauce which I let cool and mixed 50/50 with mayonnaise for the burger dressing. Sliced avocado, thinly sliced sweet pickle, the sautéed veggies, toasted Milton white buns, and baby spinach comprised the burgers which were absolutely delicious. The artichokes from Trader Joes were little and ended up being perfect for the 3 of us to share since Presley (my daughter) actually will eat artichokes. It ended up being the perfect dinner to a nice day. Hope you enjoy as much as I did. We'll see what direction this blog thing ends up going. But if I can top this one continuously, it should be okay, right?

  3. That food looks awesome. We have no shortage of seafood up here in Seattle, so I'll have to give this a try.

  4. Brad, it literally could have been out of Rachelle Ray 30 minute meals. Took almost exactly 30 minutes which was mainly waiting on the artichokes to steam. So simple. The sauce, well that is where my concoction abilities sometimes pay off. It turned out for the better last night. And the patties were straight from the Trader Joe's frozen section. You could probably out do the fish being up in Seattle with something fresh.

  7. This somehow tops my ramen + other things thrown into a pot recipe.
Also, first official post! You did it!
Pelican has some good albums. Everyone is up on The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw's jock, but I think City of Echoes is really underrated.
    Also, it let me comment!
